Dr Dave Stallworthy
B.D.S., F.I.C.D. Specialist Hospital Dentist

Dave graduated from Otago University with his BDS in December 1973, and began working at Auckland Hospital in 1974. Here he gained valuable experience in Hospital dentistry and in oral surgery, which he carried over into private practice in Otahuhu the next year. He then left on his OE and worked for several years in England furthering his career. On his return to New Zealand in 1978, he became a partner in a busy general practice in James Street, where he worked for many years.

In 1981 he took up a part-time appointment at the Whangarei Hospital to further his interest in oral surgery, and received specialist qualifications in 1990 for his work in Hospital dentistry. This is still an important part of every working week for Dave, providing him with the opportunity to treat trauma cases, such as fractured jaws, oral pathology and medically compromised patients. It also means that he is able to liase with specialist surgeons and other medical colleagues on a regular basis.

In 1997 Dave and business partner Bev van Melsem moved their practice to new premises at 19 Maunu Road, where they have been able to expand the range of services they can provide for their patients. Unfortunately Bev had to retire in 2001 due to ill health. Dave now has associates to help run the practice.

In addition to a wide range of conservative dentistry procedures, Dave’s special interests are in oral surgery and implantology.
In association with Dr. Philippa White, Dave has a fortnightly operating list at his rooms to treat patients requiring a general anaesthetic or sedation for surgery cases and for those who are nervous in the dental chair.

For those patients considering having implants, Dave is able to carry out both surgical and prosthetic procedures at his rooms. To ensure that he is up to date with the latest techniques in this area, Dave is a member of the Australasian Society of Implantologists, and the International College of Implantologists.

The rapid rate of change in dental techniques and materials has provided Dave with the impetus to attend a wide range of conferences and courses over the years, so that he can be sure that he is offering his patients treatment that is current, proven and successful.

Dr Richard Stallworthy

Richard was a Whangarei Boys High School student before attending Otago University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 2000.

He then moved to the UK and worked in Hampshire for 2 years, where emphasise was placed on cosmetic dentistry.

On his return to New Zealand in 2005, he joined the team at Maunu Dental.
Richard is an experienced Dentist who enjoys all aspects of general dentistry; he likes to take preventative approach by educating patients and using conservative dental procedures.

Richard has a special interest in endodontics and over the past 3 years he has been able to develop his endodontic technique further by using the practice’s microscope.

Richard also has experience treating patients with IV and nitrous sedation and often uses his oral surgery skills on patients who have difficult cases, requiring general anaesthetic.

Recently the practice purchased a bio-lase soft tissue laser, which Richard is routinely using for soft tissue surgery. Since he has been practising here Richard has established a large client base of regular patients.

Megan then married Guy and they moved to England for four years. As well as travelling throughout Europe, Megan gained invaluable professional development in the United Kingdom by working closely with specialists including  paedodontists, endodontists, prosthodontists and orthodontists.
