Teeth Whitening

At Maunu Dental we offer two different types of professional teeth whitening procedures. The Zoom! whitening in office system which offers immediate results; the procedure is performed here by our hygienist. The Colgate visible white take home kit is more affordable and convenient as it can be used in the comfort of your own home.

For any clients interested in whitening we prefer to have a consultation and hygiene treatment prior to whitening.

It is not ideal for some clients to have whitening treatment so a consultation is always important to discuss options and expectations. Having a hygiene treatment first prepares the teeth for the best possible whitening results.

Zoom! Professional Whitening System
A brighter, whiter smile in less than 2 hours!

The Zoom chairside whitening system is a scientifically advanced tooth whitening procedure. It’s safe, effective and fast. In less than 2 hours your teeth become dramatically whiter. Zoom whitening is ideal for anyone looking for immediate results. The convenience of Zoom in comparison to days of wearing trays at home makes it the perfect choice for the busy individual.

The procedure is simple. It beings with preparation to cover your lips and gums with protective gel, leaving only your teeth exposed. Our hygienist then applies the Zoom whitening gel, which was designed to be used with a specially designed light. The Zoom light and whitening gel work together to gently penetrate your teeth, breaking up stains and discoloration. The degree of whiteness will vary from patient to patient, depending on the structure of the teeth.

Frequently asked questions about Zoom!

Q. What is Zoom tooth whitening?
A. Zoom is a bleaching process that lightens discoloration of enamel and dentin.

Q. What causes tooth discoloration?
A. There are many causes. The most common include ageing and consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea, colas, tobacco, red wine, etc. During tooth formation, consumption of tetracycline, certain antibiotics or excessive fluoride may also cause tooth discoloration.

Q. How does the Zoom in office system work?
A. The Zoom light activated whitening gel’s active ingredient is Hydrogen Peroxide. As the Hydrogen Peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, bleaching coloured substances while the structure of the tooth is unchanged. The Zoom light aids in activating the hydrogen peroxide and helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth. A study has shown that use of the Zoom lamp increase the effectiveness of the Zoom gel by 26% or more, giving an average improvement of 8 shades.

Q. What does a patient experience during the Zoom In-Office Procedure?
A. During the procedure, patients are made to be as comfortable as possible. Individuals with a strong gag reflex or anxiety may have difficulty undergoing the entire procedure. The procedure begins with the preparation period which takes approximately 45minutes, followed by 45 minutes of bleaching treatment.

Q. Who may benefit from tooth whitening?
A. Almost anyone. However, treatment may not be as effective as it is for others. Your dental professional can determine if you are a viable candidate for this procedure through a thorough oral exam, including a shade assessment.

Q. Is whitening safe?
A. Yes. Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe. In fact, many dentists consider whitening the safest cosmetic dental procedure available. As with any tooth whitening product, Zoom is not recommended for children under 13 years of age, and pregnant or lactating women.

Q. How long do the results last?
A. By following some simple post whitening care instructions, your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. To keep your teeth looking their best, we recommend flossing, brushing twice daily, regular hygiene treatments and occasional touch-ups with Zoom weekender or nite white gel. These are professional formula products designed specifically to keep your teeth their brightest. They are available only through your dental professional.

Q. Do many people whiten their teeth?
A. More people than you might imagine. A bright sparkling smile can make a big difference for everyone. The Zoom chairside whitening system makes it easier and faster than ever before.

Q. Are there any side effects?
A. Sensitivity during the treatment may occur with some patients. The Zoom light generates minimal heat, which is the usual source of discomfort. On rare occasion minor tingling sensation in the teeth can be experienced immediately after the procedure, but always dissipate.

Q. If I’m interested, what do I do next?
A. Call us on 09 438 4400 to arrange a whitening consultation with our hygienist or ask your dentist at your next visit about what option would suit you.

Frequently asked questions about Colgate Visible White

Q.What is a professional take-home procedure?
A. Professional take-home whitening is dispensed by your dentist (or hygienist) and typically involves wearing a customised tray (mouthgaurd) which is made at the dental surgery from impressions of your teeth. Colgate Visible White take-home provides visibly whiter teeth in 3 days with only 30 minutes of wear time once a day. It usually takes about 10 – 14 days to achieve optimum results. The benefit of using a take-home kit instead of an in-office procedure is that you have more control over how white you want to go.

Q. Am I a good candidate for whitening?
A. Almost anyone can benefit from professional whitening. Generally, those individuals with healthy teeth respond best. Your dentist or hygienist can help you make the best decision based on an evaluation of your teeth.

Q. Are there any side effects?
A. In some instances, you may experience mild sensitivity. If sensitivity occurs during the process, consult your dentist. If you have a history of sensitive teeth or gums, mention this to your dentist during your evaluation.

Q. What is the difference between professional whitening and retail store whitening?
A. Professional supervision is a key factor for successful whitening. You get a personalised evaluation by your dentist. You also get a custom fit tray that ensures a comfortable fit over your teeth and enhances the delivery of the active ingredients to your teeth. Furthermore, professional systems generally have higher strength whitening agents and therefore work much more effectively allowing you to achieve better results.

Q. Are Whitening Procedures Safe?
A. Research and clinical studies have proven that tooth whitening under the supervision of a dentist is safe on teeth and gums. Colgate Visible White is dentist-dispensed. Your dentist is in the best position to recommend a treatment that is best for you.

Q. If I’m interested, what do I do next?
A. Call us on 09 438 4400 to arrange a whitening consultation with our hygienist or ask your dentist at your next visit about what option would suit you.
